If the location wasn’t enough to get you interested in attending the Social Recruiting event in New York last week, then the familiar names within the recruiting/staffing industry should have been. With heavy hitters like Sumser, Crispin, and Burnett pitching the latest on stats and trends around Social Recruiting we could have walked away happy to have attended. What Manaster, his ERE crew and the attendees (because the attendees were VITAL to the success) put together pushed upwards that bar that we’ll likely measure events from going forward…read more

All in all, it was a great day. I got my cupcake fix in, and I was able to learn how others in the industry are taking advantage of the technologies available to us. I enjoyed learning from these people and also reveled in the fact that our willingness to be early adopters positions us for much greater success moving forward…read more

Back from NYC, where we attended the ERE Social Recruiting Summit. I was there as a vendor (Tweetajob sponsored lunch), a speaker (I had 10 minutes to Keep It Real, and moderated an unconference session) and as an attendee. I am still buzzing from the energy that emanated from the participants. Sure, the topic was social media, so a certain amount of excitement was a given. The conference framework, however, was the catalyst for a different level of engagement…read more

ERE’s Social Recruiting Summit (#socialrecruiting), held in New York yesterday [Monday, Nov 17] was a another milestone in the evolution of niche, community-focused experiences that may eventually change the way we think about “conferences”- how we approach them as attendees and how their “owners” monetize them…read more

With the New York City #socialrecruiting summit less than a month away, it is now time for you to make your voice heard and shape your own conference (or should I say unconference) experience.

While one of the tracks features a somewhat structured agenda led by our tremendous session leaders, the 2nd track of the summit, the unconference track, has no agenda. So it is up to you as an attendee to decide what should be discussed.

So to that end, we have set up an EtherPad (which happens to be a tremendous free tool to use for collaborative projects like this!) You can make updates to the document embedded in this blog post or on the EtherPad site. Wherever you make the edits, you will be able to see them in real time any place the pad is displayed.

Here’s how it works:

If you would like to suggest a topic, post it below along with your name, company, and contact details.

If you would like to vote on a previously suggested topic, just copy and paste it below the original and add your name and details.

If you suggest a topic; make sure you are prepared to lead the discussion if it is selected. This does not mean that you must be an expert on that topic, you just have to be willing to lead a meaningful conversation with your peers!

The topics which receive the most votes will be brought to NYC on a whiteboard where the voting will continue to decide which sessions will be held, so add as many topics as you think you would be interested in talking about. And if you would like to post this EtherPad to your own blog, just copy and paste this piece of code:

<iframe width="600" height="400" src="http://etherpad.com/9uvQ3r68JH?fullScreen=1&sidebar=0"></iframe>

I’m so excited to chair the upcoming #socialrecruiting summit. If you are like me, you are telling your friends and colleagues about the upcoming event in NYC. If you are like me, you have to stop and explain exactly what social recruiting means in the talent management world.

Michael Specht wrote a great post, several months ago, with a simple and concise definition of social recruiting.

Using social media tools as part of recruiting.

Building a community of potential candidates.

Engaging with candidates as people not numbers.

Can anyone do better than that? Do we have a universal definition for the act of social recruiting?

When you talk about social recruiting as a construct, I want to know how you define it. Do you leave off the word social and just use the broader term of recruiting? Is ’social recruiting’ something so unique that it still requires a separate definition, or is it ubiquitous enough in our industry that it’s embedded in your daily operations and recruiting strategy?

I’d love to know what you think. The comments are open…

About five months ago, in the midst of the worst economy we have seen in over 80 years and with very little fanfare, we announced that we would be hosting a new event for our industry, the first ever #socialrecruiting summit.

Our industry has been embracing new social media tools for years, but the debate has always raged strong whether it is anything more than hype. However, after the announcement, and with no real marketing other than spreading the word through social media channels, the event sold out in just six weeks and generated a waiting list of over 80 people trying to get into the event. All of this happening during a time when the conference and trade show industry was seeing a decline in attendance upwards of 40%. This was an obvious testament to the need for information sharing and discussion on social recruiting topics.

So, on June 15 in Silicon Valley, 225 recruiters and industry professionals were joined by thousands of others who participated in a live stream and online chat, to move beyond the hype and share stories about what is already producing results and how we can successfully incorporate these tools in our recruiting strategy.

The feedback from those in attendance showed that while this first event was a step in the right direction, there are still many unanswered questions and a need for more discussion and information sharing.

So to that end, we are excited to announce that we have secured the dates and location for the next #socialrecruiting summit, to take place in New York City on November 16.

This next event will be slightly different from the previous one. #socialrecruiting summit will still be a hybrid of a conference/unconference with some sessions led by those who have been at the forefront of applying these tools to real-world recruiting challenges and unconference sessions determined onsite by you, the attendees! However, in New York City we will also dedicate space throughout the day for networking and small group information sharing.

Stay tuned, as the agenda and session leader roster is coming together and the site is being set up to take your registrations. And since the last one sold out, make sure to plan to book early so you don’t get shut out. We will once again be limiting attendance to assure a fully interactive and immersive attendee experience unlike any you have ever seen at a recruiting event.

If you have any questions about this new event, feel free to leave them in the comments below or email us!

And stay tuned for more info over the next few days.

I think it is safe to say that an incredible shared experience was had by the 225 people at the Google HQ, the thousands more who participated in the live stream and chat, and those who contributed to over 1200 tweets on June 15 alone!

But there is nothing like first hand accounts from those in the audience to get a feel for what took place at the first ever Social Recruiting Summit.

Here are some of what has been written by the participants. If you have something to add or are in the process of writing your own post about your experience, please leave a link to it in the comments section to this post. Hopefully we can do a follow up in a few weeks with additional links to those accounts.

Over two hundred of us will soon be converging on the Googleplex for the very first Social Recruiting Summit. You’ve seen the agenda. You already know there is a fantastic mix of speakers and that each of them has their own unique lens they’ll be bringing to social recruiting. Each of the breakout sessions is designed to bring you into the conversation so be ready to join in! But, there’s one more very important element in the mix of speakers – YOU!  Yes, YOU! Â

Everyone attending the Social Recruiting Summit is invited to submit their ideas and lead a discussion. Â The evolution of an idea is nurtured through diverse voices – and you’ll have plenty of voices to draw from. Â As ideas are nurtured they morphe into something even more incredible then you may have originally imagined. Â What ideas do you have? Â How will they be shaped, grow wings and eventually take flight? Â

Unconference Sessions – are you ready for your hour in the spotlight?During each of the three concurrent rounds there is one open breakout session titled Unconfernece. This is your opportunity to lead a discussion around any social recruiting topic that inspires you and engages others.

Here’s how its going to work!
When you arrive at the Social Recruiting Summit registration area there will be a place for you to sign-up to host one of the three Unconference sessions. You’ll include your name, a session title and something compelling about your session (a few bullet points or short overview statement). When we break for the Google tour, each Summit participant will be able to identify their top sessions of interest. The three sessions with the highest level of interest will be selected and immediately given a time slot during one of the three breakout rounds. If you get session #1 your up in 5…4…3…2…1…showtime!

Each session should begin with about 10 – 15 minutes of you presenting your idea. Then, your role is to guide the conversation over the next 40 minutes, capture the groups contributions, and continue building on the original concept, or move in a new direction as the dialogue leads the way. This is the beauty of open dialogue and the value of collective voices.

What you can do now?Â
Think about how will you intrigue other people and pique their interest? What is it that your experiencing in social recruiting today? What are you envisioning for the future of social recruiting? Take advantage of the comment section below to begin sharing your ideas. Start a discussion on Twitter or Facebook and see what people think.
